Joan started playing the harmonica at age 20. Although her musical career didn’t begin for another 15 years, she soon began playing rhythm guitar and singing. Then the banjo bug bit! With influences from a diverse group of banjoists, her clawhammer style has developed into a cross between old time and progressive. Her soft lead vocals and harmonies are one of the signature trademarks of the band.

 Joan’s songwriting abilities have fused gospel, patriotic and historical tunes into the total Lost Mill String Band experience.
